In a significant move for the visual effects (VFX) industry, Boris FX, a renowned developer of VFX software, has acquired SynthEyes, a standalone 3D tracking and match moving application. SynthEyes, known for its fast and accurate tracking capabilities, will now be developed and sold as a standalone application by Boris FX.

Originally developed by Andersson Technologies LLC over a twenty-year period, SynthEyes has been a staple in the film and VFX industry, used extensively to analyze the movement of cameras and objects in footage. Its technology is built around the principle of match moving, which involves identifying and tracking specific image features to reconstruct camera motion and scene geometry in 3D space.

Boris FX's acquisition of SynthEyes marks a strategic move to enhance their capabilities in 3D tracking and AI-assisted roto work. The acquisition includes the SynthEyes interface, and its 3D camera-solving tracking tools will be leveraged across Boris FX product brands.

Dr. Russell Andersson, the creator and founder of SynthEyes, expressed excitement about starting a new chapter under the Boris FX brand. He noted that many of their artists already rely on Boris FX products, making the acquisition a natural fit. Boris Yamnisky, CEO and founder of Boris FX, also expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, praising SynthEyes' speed, accuracy, object tracking, and ability to deal with complex lens distortions.

The latest SynthEyes 2025 release includes AI-powered roto tools, improving automation of rotoscoping tasks in compositing. Other features include 3D camera and object tracking, planar and geometry tracking, fast and robust tracking algorithms, and locked shot solving.

SynthEyes is versatile, applicable to various scenarios such as film and television VFX, 3D compositing, virtual production, post-production workflows, and both static and dynamic shots. It is available as a standalone application, with a permanent license starting at $499.

Jessie Electa Petrov, Director of Marketing at Boris FX, is the media contact for the company. Dr. Russell Andersson will continue in his leadership role for SynthEyes under Boris FX. The Boris FX Suite, which now includes SynthEyes, offers a powerful end-to-end solution with creative editing, audio, visual effects, planar tracking, motion design, and compositing tools.

A live Q&A and SynthEyes demo with Dr. Andersson will be hosted by Boris FX on September 13, 2023, at 2 pmET. Boris FX will also demonstrate SynthEyes at IBC (Amsterdam, Netherlands) from September 15 - 18, 2023. For more information, contact Jessie Electa Petrov at jessiep@pur socials.com or 617-451-9900. The SynthEyes branding toolkit can also be downloaded.

Technology from SynthEyes, a renowned 3D tracking and match moving application, will be further developed and utilized within Boris FX's product brands, enhancing their capabilities in 3D tracking and AI-assisted roto work. Boris FX plans to leverage SynthEyes' 3D camera-solving tracking tools across their suite of creative editing, visual effects, planar tracking, motion design, and compositing tools.
