Aalborg Students Unveil Revolutionary Air-Water Drone
A group of students at Aalborg University in Denmark have developed a unique drone capable of operating in both air and water environments. The innovative aircraft, which uses variable pitch propellers, can dive underwater, move around, and then take to the skies again.
The drone, created as part of a bachelor's thesis, is not the first of its kind. Previous air-water hybrid drones have been developed by Rutgers University and Chinese scientists. However, the Aalborg University team has designed their drone to transition seamlessly between environments.
The drone's propellers can adjust their pitch to provide optimal performance in both air and water. This allows the drone to generate negative thrust underwater, enabling it to maneuver effectively. The students, enrolled at Jade University of Applied Sciences, built and tested the drone over two semesters.
The drone's potential real-world applications are vast, ranging from emergency response and military use to vessel inspections, marine exploration, and search and rescue. The students' achievement demonstrates the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative thinking in engineering.
