Acoustic Energy's iconic speaker makes a comeback: Introduction of the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition
Acoustic Energy, a renowned name in the world of hi-fi, is marking its 40th anniversary by releasing a special edition of its iconic AE1 bookshelf speakers. The AE1 40th Anniversary Edition is a faithful evolution of the original model, aiming to preserve the sonic character that made it a legend. First launched in 1987, the Acoustic Energy AE1 speakers are considered one of the debut products that defined hi-fi history. They are part of 33 such products, according to a list that includes legendary brands like JMR, Chario, Dali, Diapason, Dynaudio, Opera, PSB, Tannoy, Triangle, Acapella Audio Arts, Monitor Audio, and Acoustic Energy themselves. The new model features several updates while maintaining the classic design. The speakers are available in High Gloss Black or Walnut veneer, each cabinet boasting 10 layers of gloss paint. The internal volume of the cabinets has been increased by half a litre, providing more energy in the sound. Mat Spandl, Managing Director of Acoustic Energy, emphasizes that the new model is a faithful evolution, not a simple reissue. "We've made significant revisions to both drivers," he says, "and the new aluminium tweeter has a larger voice coil (29mm) and a large rear chamber for energy absorption." The bass driver in the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition has a slightly larger 12.5cm spun and hard-anodised cone and an aluminium shorting ring to reduce distortion. This has been complemented with the increased internal volume. The cabinet of the new model uses an HDF version of Acoustic Energy's RSC technology, tuned to mimic the acoustic characteristics of the original cabinet. The AE1 40th Anniversary Edition speakers measure the same as the old model: 29.5 x 18 x 24cm (HWD). They are priced at £1499 per pair.
