Advanced Bidirectional Converter for Renewables and Data Centers: Pioneering Spanish Technology

In a significant step forward for Spain's renewable energy sector, Galician company Norvento has presented the nXL converter - a powerful and compact piece of equipment, entirely developed within the country. The unveiling took place on Monday in Lugo, under Norvento's new Norvento TECHnPower label.

The nXL converter boasts a low harmonic content (THDi <1%) and a DC/AC ratio of up to 200% without modifications, making it an ideal solution for various applications. Norvento focuses on data centers as a priority market for the nXL converter, but it is also compatible with solar plants, storage systems, green hydrogen electrolyzers, railway catenaries, and ports.

One of the standout features of the nXL converter is its sealed cooling system, designed by Norvento. This innovative system combines liquid cooling of main components with internal recirculation of cold air, ensuring efficient heat dissipation and extended lifespan.

The nXL converter is bidirectional and capable of operating in both on-grid and off-grid modes. It also offers direct integration with batteries that cover demand peaks or possible interruptions, ensuring continuity in operation. The converter has IP65 certification throughout the system, allowing deployment in any scenario.

The launch of the nXL is part of the neFO project, a new plant that Norvento is building in Lugo and will begin operating on January 1, 2027. The neFO project aims to double the initial production capacity of 5 GW in just three years. As the first self-sufficient and emission-neutral factory in Spain, neFO reflects a shift in model: from Lugo to the world, with proprietary technology and a global vision.

The European Commission's Innovation Fund has recognised the relevance of the neFO project with a €27.5 million subsidy. Beyond technical innovation, the project symbolises Spain's bet on positioning itself at the forefront of critical technologies for decarbonization.

With the nXL converter, Norvento is not only manufacturing converters but also driving a sustainable industrial ecosystem. This initiative is expected to generate employment and solidify Galicia as a technological hub in Europe's energy transition. Norvento TECHnPower aims to stay ahead by offering a product capable of meeting the most challenging demands in the energy transition.

The nXL converter, with its power density of 622 kVA/m3 and the ability to offer up to 9 MVA in a standard 20-foot container, is a key piece for accelerating the integration of renewables, storage, and new industries like green hydrogen. The nXL converter is designed to guarantee stable operation in extreme climates, deserts, high-corrosion marine environments, very low or very high temperatures, and areas with conductive particles in suspension, making it a versatile solution for various energy needs.
