Advancements in the Restoration of the Troubled GREIF System:

The historic sailing training ship GREIF is currently undergoing a significant renovation at the Maritime Industrial and Commercial Park Volkswerft in Stralsund. This extensive overhaul includes equipping the ship with navigation, electricity, heating, sanitation, ventilation, and completing the interior.

The complex restoration of the rigging is made possible by the financial support of the Eastern German Savings Banks Foundation. An international team is working on the ship, focusing on making the masts seaworthy again. Steel cables are being tensioned to securely hold the masts on the ship for future use, a key step in the renovation process.

Parallel to the rigging work, the production of new superstructures is underway. A central deck house is being produced, and a lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminum card house for the rear area is being created. A new canopy for a protected entrance to the forecastle is also being made, expected to be completed in the coming weeks and installed aboard the GREIF.

The renovation of the GREIF is supported by a broad alliance, including the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald, the Eastern German Savings Banks Foundation, Rahsegler GREIF e.V. support association, and other foundations, associations, and private donations.

The financial support for the renovation of the 'GREIF' sailing training ship comes primarily through public urban development funding programs ('Städtebaufördermittel'), although exact contributing organizations are not detailed in the search results; the ship is located in Greifswald and requires significant restoration.

Weekly updates on the GREIF's renovation progress can be followed on Instagram (sss_greif) and Facebook (@segelschulschiff.greif). For more detailed information, a construction diary of the GREIF's renovation progress can be found at www.sssgreif.de/logbuch. The successful achievement was the hoisting of the front of the two masts, the foresail mast, on board and securing it.

The front jib, or bowsprit, where the foresails will later be attached, has already been installed. The GREIF is scheduled to leave the shipyard hall and return to the water this year, ready to continue its mission of sailing training for young people.
