"AI advancement is irreversible, readers opine: Halting the ongoing development of artificial intelligence is considered an unattainable feat"

In a recent poll conducted on our website, readers were invited to share their views on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and whether it should be allowed to reach the level of intelligence equivalent to humans. The poll, which attracted 1,787 responses, revealed a mix of concerns and cautious optimism about the future of AI.

The prospect of AI models matching human-like intelligence is becoming more feasible, and this has sparked a lively debate. Some believe that the benefits of advanced AI will outweigh the risks, while others are more sceptical. Only 9% of respondents expressed optimism about the benefits outweighing the risks, with 46% believing that the risks are too great and AI development should be halted.

One comment highlighted the need to shift incentives from pursuing artificial general intelligence (AGI) to making existing AI more usable. Another suggested regulatory approaches to AI development, including heavy taxation on Large Language Models and progressive taxation on larger model training. These proposals aim to manage smaller, specialized AI models outside of corporate control to help the public develop healthier relationships with AI.

The singularity, a hypothetical future event where AI transcends AGI to become a superintelligent entity, is a topic of much discussion. Some believe that we have already gone too far to delay the trajectory towards superintelligent AI, while others, like Kate Sarginson, worry that it is too late and she will not live to see the results of this catastrophe. Yet, 5% of respondents believe it doesn't matter because we will never reach singularity.

Some readers emphasized that even if artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence, human qualities such as consciousness, creativity, free will, and value-based decision-making remain indispensable. They advocate focusing on these unique human strengths, fostering empathy, emotional intelligence, and independent thinking as essential for society's future resilience against AI dominance.

However, concerns about the energy consumption of AI chatbots and the rising AI slop, or the waste generated by AI, cannot be ignored. These issues could affect how we use the internet and may require urgent attention.

The poll also revealed that 30% of respondents believe AI advancement should be delayed until proper safeguards are developed. CeCe thinks that it is impossible to shove the AI genie back in the bottle. Yet, she and many others are calling for careful consideration of the potential risks and benefits of AI development, inviting a broader discussion about the role AI should play in our lives and society.
