AI developer OpenAI may expand its AI capabilities beyond its current Pin system, potentially creating smart glasses, a speaker, and other devices - here's what's been revealed.
Meta is making waves in the tech world with the announcement of a trio of new smart glasses. The Meta Ray-Ban Display specs feature a display in one lens, while the Meta Neural Band focuses on gesture controls.
Meanwhile, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is gearing up for the release of its first device, scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027. To help bring this device to life, OpenAI has reached out to Goertek, a company known for assembling Apple's popular devices such as AirPods, HomePods, and Apple Watches.
In a bid to strengthen its AI capabilities, OpenAI has also been attracting top talent from Apple. Notably, more than two dozen former Apple employees, including hardware engineers and designers, have joined OpenAI since the acquisition of Jony Ive's startup io Products in May 2024. These new hires have contributed to the development of a suite of AI-based devices, including a smart speaker with a display, a digital dictation device, smart glasses, a wearable pin, and a digital voice recorder.
Apple, too, is not standing still in the AI race. The tech giant is rumoured to be developing Apple Glasses, which could be released in 2027. However, the rollout of Apple Intelligence has faced challenges, making 2026 a significant year for the future of Apple's AI if they can overcome these hurdles.
In addition, Apple is expected to release a third-generation HomePod with a display later this year or in 2026.
Elsewhere, some users are considering a switch to Gemini after using ChatGPT as their daily chatbot for years. A new study has shown how people are using ChatGPT, and Google should reportedly be concerned about its impact.
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has hinted at a wearable pin device, adding to the excitement surrounding the company's future offerings. Tang Tan, the current chief hardware officer and former Apple product design lead, has been pitching OpenAI as having less red tape and 'more collaboration' to people coming over from Apple.
As the race for AI dominance heats up, it's clear that we're on the cusp of a new era in technology. Stay tuned for more updates as these tech giants continue to push the boundaries of innovation.
