Airbus collaborates with Avincis on revolutionary Air Mobility Technology
Airbus and Avincis Partner to Develop Advanced Air Mobility Solutions
Airbus and Avincis, a world-leading Aerial Emergency Services operator, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The partnership, which builds on the longstanding and successful cooperation between the two companies, aims to explore how eVTOLs can contribute to missions that save lives and protect communities, particularly in urban and suburban environments.
Avincis operates over 60 Airbus aircraft across Europe, Africa, and South America for safe, reliable, and consistent operations. With a fleet of over 220 aircraft and a team of more than 2,400 professionals, Avincis brings operational experience and infrastructure readiness to support eVTOL deployment.
The collaboration focuses on defining the concept of operations for eVTOL aircraft throughout Europe and beyond. The CityAirbus NextGen prototype, developed by Airbus for Advanced Air Mobility, serves as a key component of this partnership. The fully electric vehicle was presented to the public in March 2024 following final assembly and power-on in December 2023.
Currently, the CityAirbus NextGen prototype is undergoing testing at Airbus' AAM test centre in Donauwörth, Germany, before its initial flight later this year.
John Boag, CEO of Avincis, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that eVTOLs will play an important role in Avincis' long-term fleet strategy. Balkiz Sarihan, Head of Urban Air Mobility at Airbus, also expressed pleasure at partnering with Avincis, noting Avincis' operational network as a valuable tool for exploring the mission potential of CityAirbus NextGen.
Both Airbus and Avincis will jointly work to define mission profiles for eVTOL operations in Europe and other target regions. The partnership is another step towards the creation of an AAM ecosystem, with similar urban air mobility efforts underway globally.
As the world continues to grapple with urban congestion and the need for sustainable transportation solutions, the Airbus-Avincis partnership represents a significant step forward in the development of practical and scalable AAM operations. By leveraging Avincis' operational expertise and Airbus’s aerospace innovation, the partnership aims to reduce congestion and carbon emissions through innovative electric VTOL transport solutions.
Airbus remains committed to expanding partnerships worldwide to build a viable AAM market. With bases in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Finland, as well as operations in Mozambique and Chile, Avincis is well-positioned to contribute to this global effort.
Technology will play a crucial role in the joint development of Advanced Air Mobility solutions by Airbus and Avincis, as they work to define mission profiles for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) operations.
The Airbus-Avincis partnership aims to leverage Avincis' operational expertise and Airbus’s aerospace innovation to create scalable electric VTOL transport solutions, utilizing technology to address the need for sustainable transportation in urban environments.
