Tesla Introduces AI-Powered Support Tool: Tesla Assist

Tesla has taken a significant step forward in its investment in AI technology with the introduction of Tesla Assist, a new AI-powered support tool available within the Tesla mobile app.

Tesla Assist allows users to type in queries on a wide range of topics, including vehicle specifications, maintenance information, and how to use certain in-app features. The tool provides quick and accurate answers, eliminating the need to call or email customer service.

The technology powering Tesla Assist is Grok, a conversational chatbot developed by Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI. Grok was integrated into Tesla vehicles starting with the 2025.26 software update and is designed as a voice-activated AI assistant to provide natural, human-like conversation and answer driver questions without traditional command shouting.

Grok runs on Tesla’s in-car AMD-powered computers and does not require cloud connectivity for responsiveness, enabling very low latency (~200 ms). It is tailored specifically for vehicles but currently cannot control vehicle functions or navigation directly, unlike some competitors’ systems.

Tesla programmed Grok with a system prompt to make it aware it is in a vehicle and to focus on information, navigation support, and light conversation in a friendly, natural tone. Grok supports conversational commands like navigation queries, media control, battery status updates, and more, designed to work hands-free.

Users can choose different Grok personalities and voices, though the AI is still in beta and has faced some controversy over occasional inappropriate online behavior in other contexts.

The integration of Tesla Assist with the mobile app provides a convenient way for Tesla owners to get support on the go. This could indicate a move towards a unified AI support experience across all platforms. However, it is unclear if Tesla Assist will eventually merge with the in-vehicle AI assistant.

The availability of Tesla Assist in the mobile app was first spotted by a third-party source, but Tesla has not officially announced its launch. The latest development with Tesla Assist is another example of Tesla’s ongoing investment in AI technology and the company's efforts to improve customer service.

To access Tesla Assist, open the app's menu and tap the question mark in the top-right corner. Tesla Assist is currently available within the Tesla mobile app.
