Berlin's 'West City Entrance' District: A Car-Lite Future on the Avus
Berlin's Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing is set to choose a planning team to develop a master plan for a new city district, 'West City Entrance', on the Avus in the west of Berlin. The project aims to create a future-oriented area on the southwestern edge of the city, minimizing car traffic and prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists.
The planning area spans 45 hectares between the S-Bahn stations Westkreuz and Grunewald, including the exhibition grounds and ICC. Four teams have been shortlisted and will present their plans in June 2023. The project seeks to transform the area into a vibrant, mixed-use district with barrier-free connections, parking-and-ride concepts, and shared mobility services.
The renovation of the highway interchange at the Funkturm is a key project, with 'median strips' at intersections earmarked for industrial uses and office buildings, as they are unsuitable for residential construction. The ICC will serve as the quarter's hub, with new industrial buildings planned for vacant areas.
The Senate Department's decision on the planning team will pave the way for the development of the 'West City Entrance' district. The project's goal is to create a sustainable, car-reduced urban area that caters to the needs of modern city dwellers, with a focus on pedestrians, cyclists, and innovative mobility solutions.
