Century Lithium announces production of battery-grade lithium metal anodes sourced from Angle Island lithium carbonate
Century Lithium's Angel Island Project Advances as a Domestic Lithium Supply Source
Century Lithium's Angel Island project, located in Esmeralda County, Nevada, is making significant strides as a domestic source of battery-grade lithium carbonate, a critical component for electric vehicle batteries. The project has been granted FAST-41 transparency status under a US federal initiative, aiming to expedite mineral projects essential for energy and technology supply chains.
The Angel Island project hosts one of the largest sedimentary lithium deposits in the United States. It distinguishes itself through a unique processing method that combines chloride-based leaching with Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE). This innovative approach enables a full end-to-end refining process capable of producing battery-grade lithium carbonate with relatively low operating costs, estimated at approximately US$2,833 per tonne.
Century Lithium's President and CEO, Bill Willoughby, stated that the collaboration between Century Lithium and Alpha-En Corporation, a Hopewell Junction, New York-based company with a patented room-temperature conversion process for producing lithium-metal anodes (Li-MA), is a testament to the quality of Century Lithium's material and its technical capabilities.
Century Lithium provided Alpha-En with a sample of 99.8% pure lithium carbonate from Angel Island, which was used to produce Li-MA. The resulting lithium metal exceeded the quality of battery-grade lithium carbonate from a commercial non-domestic source in a pilot test.
Century Lithium maintains a positive long-term outlook on lithium-based batteries and believes they will play a critical role in the growth of the electric vehicle and stationary energy storage markets. The high-quality lithium-metal anodes produced using Century Lithium's lithium carbonate have translated directly into superior performance.
Century Lithium is progressing Angel Island through ongoing permitting, engineering, and technical development at its Demonstration Plant in Nye County, Nevada. The company looks forward to further supporting Alpha-En's efforts to develop a domestic lithium supply chain.
The success in producing battery-grade lithium metal anodes from Century Lithium's lithium carbonate is significant for the development of a domestic lithium supply chain in the United States. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, a secure and reliable domestic supply of lithium is essential for the country's energy security and economic growth.
Century Lithium Corp. is listed on the TSXV, OTCQX, and Frankfurt stock exchanges. The company's focus on the Angel Island project reflects its commitment to advancing battery-related efforts and contributing to the growth of the electric vehicle and stationary energy storage markets.
