CEO of Baidu, Robin Li, pushes for expedited advancements in artificial intelligence during a technology conference in Paris.
Robin Li, the CEO of Baidu, addressed a crowd at the VivaTech event in Paris in 2024, sharing his vision for the future of artificial intelligence (AI). His remarks came amidst ongoing debates about the pace of AI innovation versus ethical considerations, as the global AI market continues to expand.
Li believes that artificial generative intelligence (AGI) could significantly enhance productivity, potentially replicating the productivity of billions of people. He envisioned new formats of AI applications achieving large daily active user (DAU) bases, comparable to popular mobile apps like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
However, Li's call for faster AI development is a contrarian view in the industry. Concerns about AI's rapid advancements have been expressed by industry figures and tech giants such as Elon Musk, who signed an open letter earlier in 2023 calling for a pause on AI advancements. Eric Schmidt, former chairman and CEO of Google, also expressed similar concerns in a conversation with Harvard University's Graham Allison in October 2023.
Despite these concerns, Li emphasized an application-driven approach could propel innovation in foundational models. He referenced Baidu's Ernie Bot, an AI chatbot released in March 2023, which has now garnered 200 million users.
A study by PwC suggests that contributions of up to USD 15.7 trillion by AI to the global economy by 2030 are possible, a figure greater than the current output of China and India combined. The global AI market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36.6% from 2024-2030, according to Grand View Research.
Li emphasized that if AI can be as good as humans, it could solve the population problem and transform economies, with the productivity of eight billion people being potentially achievable. However, he also acknowledged the need for ethical considerations and responsible AI development.
Li's vision for the future of AI is a topic of ongoing debate, but one thing is certain: the rapid advancements in AI technology are reshaping the global economy and society, and the future is full of possibilities.
