CEO of ZF advocates against sole reliance on e-mobility as a solution for the future

In a significant move, Mathias Miedreich has been appointed as the new CEO of automotive supplier ZF. With a focus on the complex questions of the future powertrain, Miedreich aims to steer ZF towards a technology-open future, transcending the conventional notion of electrification.

The company, currently in the midst of economic difficulties due to its powertrain division, is planning a restructuring under Miedreich's leadership. The goal is to make ZF hard to beat in powertrain systems by reducing costs, adapting capacities, and leveraging scale effects in components.

ZF's strength lies in its system understanding across various powertrain forms. This versatility allows the company to act as a system provider, advising and deciding between V8 engines, hybrid, or range extender solutions for a US car manufacturer.

The trend towards hybrid technology is gaining traction once again, and Miedreich sees potential in range extender electric vehicles. These vehicles utilise a compact combustion engine without a connection to the wheels as a power generator.

Despite the search for partnerships in future technologies, no company has publicly announced negotiations with ZF as of yet. However, any potential partnership requires substance and preparation, with the key focus being on improving competitiveness and concentrating on core competencies.

The goal is not just to secure the future of the company but also the future of its employees who will remain in the powertrain division in the long term. Chinese customers at the IAA Mobility show have shown interest in range extender solutions, indicating a promising market for ZF.

Miedreich emphasises that strategies must be long-term, and while the previous focus on electrification was not wrong, the future of powertrains will be shaped by technological openness. The company achieved a balanced result in the powertrain division in the first half of 2025, thanks to many small changes.

However, ZF faces an excess of capacity in electrification and aims to reduce it. The restructuring of the powertrain division is deemed necessary, and Miedreich sees the need to tackle it decisively.

In conclusion, under Miedreich's leadership, ZF is poised to navigate the complex landscape of the future powertrain, aiming for technological openness and improved competitiveness. The company is a testament to the ongoing transformation in the automotive industry, adapting to the changing needs and demands of the market.
