Anduril Industries Explores American-Made Laptops

Palmer Luckey, the co-founder of Anduril Industries, has expressed interest in launching American-made laptops, but the company has not yet announced any formal plans or confirmed a start date for production.

At the Reindustrialize Summit, Luckey posed a question to attendees: would they be willing to pay a premium for a laptop that is truly made in America? He publicly polled consumers about their willingness to pay up to 20% more for such a product, and received strong positive responses.

Anduril is primarily known for its work in defense technology and advanced military hardware. Entering the consumer hardware market with American-made laptops would revive a capability that has been largely lost since Dell closed its U.S. PC plants in the 2000s.

The company is in talks with chipmakers, assemblers, and suppliers necessary for such production. However, it's important to note that the final assembly or processing, all significant processing, and all or virtually all ingredients or components of the product must occur in the U.S to meet the Made in USA Standard, as set out by the Federal Trade Commission.

If the laptops are to be competitive in terms of performance with recent MacBook models, the price increase might be significant. Sourcing exclusively American-made components for a laptop might not result in a mere 20% price bump.

Luckey and several co-founders of Anduril also worked at Palantir Technologies before starting their own company. Anduril primarily focuses on the development of autonomous systems, including surveillance tools, aerial vehicles, and underwater vehicles.
