Cyberattacks Affect One-Third of Japanese Companies, Survey Shows

In a recent survey conducted by Teikoku Databank, it was revealed that small and medium-sized businesses in Japan are experiencing a significant increase in cyberattacks. The survey, which targeted 26,389 companies nationwide, gathered 10,645 valid responses.

The survey found that 30.3% of small and medium-sized companies in Japan reported experiencing a cyberattack. This figure is lower compared to large companies, which had a higher incidence of cyberattacks at 41.9%. However, when it comes to recent attacks within the past month, 6.9% of small and medium-sized companies were affected, with 7.9% of small businesses experiencing such attacks during the same period[1].

These statistics highlight a growing concern about cybersecurity across all business sizes in Japan. Fifty-two-point-four percent (52.4%) of the surveyed companies stated they had not experienced a cyberattack. However, it is worth noting that the survey did not provide data on the percentage of companies that were unsure if they had experienced a cyberattack in the past month.

The survey also revealed a rapid recent rise in cyberattack risks for smaller enterprises. Teikoku Databank reported this trend, but the survey did not specify the time period for this rise.

For the manufacturing sector, small businesses are defined as having fewer than 20 employees, while for most other sectors, small businesses are defined as having fewer than 5 employees.

The survey did not provide data on the cyberattack occurrence for large companies in the past month. This lack of information underscores the need for further research and awareness about cybersecurity risks for large businesses in Japan.

In conclusion, the survey results indicate that small and medium-sized businesses in Japan are at a significant risk of cyberattacks, with a higher percentage experiencing recent attacks compared to small and medium-sized companies overall. The rapid recent rise in cyberattack risks for smaller enterprises is a concern that requires immediate attention and action from businesses and authorities alike.

The survey on cyberattacks in Japan shows that small businesses, despite having a lower overall cyberattack incidence, have a higher percentage (6.9%) experiencing such attacks within the past month compared to the total small and medium-sized companies (30.3%). Additionally, the report indicates a rising trend in cybersecurity risks for smaller enterprises, which warrants immediate focus from businesses and cybersecurity authorities in the technology sector.
