DaVinci Resolve embraces a significant stride in the realm of filmmaking, venturing into immersive, expansive video production.

Blackmagic Design has released an update for its popular video editing software, DaVinci Resolve, version 20.1. This update focuses primarily on immersive video creators, offering a host of new features and improvements.

Improved Curve Editor and Keyframe Panel

The curve editor in DaVinci Resolve has become more responsive and flexible, while the keyframe panel has been overhauled with better refinement controls. These changes aim to provide a smoother and more intuitive editing experience.

Seamless Integration with Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive Camera

The Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera now pairs seamlessly with the DaVinci 20.1 and Fusion 20.1 updates. This integration allows for the editing, colour grading, and visual effects of immersive footage captured by the URSA Cine Immersive camera.

Support for Apple Immersive Workflows

The update introduces support for Apple Immersive workflows, making DaVinci Resolve the first professional editor to offer an end-to-end solution for Apple Immersive Video content creation, editing, and delivery.

New Immersive Video Viewer and Project Settings

A new immersive video viewer is included in the update, allowing for pan, tilt, and roll clips for viewing on 2D monitors or streaming to Apple Vision Pro. The update also includes new project settings on every page (editing, color correction, visual effects, audio post-production, and delivery) designed for immersive workflows.

Direct Monitoring and Real-time Streaming

With this update, editors can directly monitor and real-time stream immersive content to the Apple Vision Pro headset, allowing them to preview immersive video both on standard 2D monitors with pan, tilt, and roll controls and directly in the VR headset.

Native Support for Apple Spatial Audio Format

The update also includes native support for the Apple Spatial Audio Format, enabling realistic, lifelike spatial soundscapes integrated within immersive video projects.

Additional Features and Improvements

Other enhancements include a 360º backdrop track feature, enabling filmmakers to place content around the immersive projection area’s periphery, enhancing creative possibilities in immersive video composition. The update also offers workflow improvements such as the ability to treat immersive video files like traditional media with drag-and-drop on the Edit page.

Additional quality-of-life enhancements relevant to immersive content include refined keyframe easing, improved curve editor, MultiText styling and CSV import for motion graphics, and AI Magic Mask 2 support within Fusion.

General Performance Refinements

The update also includes enhancements to the Cut and Edit pages, Fusion, Color, Resolve FX, Fairlight, Codec and IO, and general performance refinements.

Availability

The 20.1 update for DaVinci Resolve remains free, as is the software itself. Sample immersive video clips for DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.1 (macOS) are available to download.
