Denmark's Finance sector selects SurePay for nationwide Voice over Protocol (VoP) service deployment
SurePay, a leading platform used by over 200 financial institutions, is set to play a significant role in the upcoming Verification of Payee (VoP) implementation in Denmark and Belgium. This initiative, part of the Instant Payments Regulation (IPR), aims to reduce payment fraud by verifying the beneficiary name and IBAN before execution of payments.
In Denmark, which has become the first non-Euro country to implement a nationwide VoP solution, SurePay has been selected by Finance Denmark to provide a national VoP service. This partnership connects Danish banks to a broader network of institutions already using SurePay's solution across Europe.
CEO of SurePay, David-Jan Janse, stated that the partnership empowers Danish banks to proactively fight fraud and comply with EU regulation. Michael Busk-Jepsen, executive director at Finance Denmark, emphasized SurePay's deep expertise and insight into applying Verification of Payee (VoP) across various payment scenarios, including individuals and small and large businesses.
In Belgium, as a Eurozone economy, the country will adhere fully to the October 9, 2025 deadline for VoP implementation under the Instant Payments Regulation. Software providers, such as PASS Consulting Group and IFX Payments, have already completed certification and integration of VoP systems in advance of the deadline, signaling operational readiness across multiple European markets, including those outside the Eurozone like Denmark and Belgium.
The VoP service checks whether the recipient's name matches the provided IBAN. Its primary intention is to reduce impersonation fraud and misdirected payments. The service will launch in live mode on September 2, 2025, according to the European Payments Council (EPC), which prepares readiness and testing tools for service providers.
The VoP obligation will apply to both SEPA and SEPA Instant payments, reinforcing verification processes across all participating countries. As of mid-2025, VoP is scheduled to be implemented and go live across the SEPA area, including non-Euro countries such as Denmark and Belgium, by October 9, 2025, or shortly before.
In summary, Denmark and Belgium are on track to launch Verification of Payee by October 2025, ensuring enhanced fraud prevention and payment accuracy for their banking customers in line with EU regulations and EPC frameworks.
