DFDS Acquires Ekol Logistics, Boosts Mediterranean Presence

DFDS, the Danish shipping company, has recently acquired Ekol Logistics, strengthening its presence in Turkey and the Mediterranean region. The acquisition, approved by the European Commission in July 2021, sees DFDS now owning 100% of Ekol, which continues to operate under its own brand. Torben Carlsen, CEO of DFDS, believes that nearshoring will drive supply chains closer to end markets, bolstering Turkey's role as a manufacturing hub for Europe.

DFDS operates several ferry connections along the Mediterranean coast, including routes between Italy, Turkey, and Greece. The company plans to add road transport to its Mediterranean ferry network, expanding its intermodal logistics connections across Europe. This move is not a new service but a standard offering from Ekol Logistics, which DFDS has acquired. Ekol's international transport network, now part of DFDS, generated a revenue of €470m in 2023. DFDS expects a 14% growth in the transport sector between Turkey and Europe up to 2028, driven by increased nearshoring activity. To support this growth, DFDS will offer end-to-end transport solutions between Turkey and Europe, including distribution services and warehousing.

DFDS' acquisition of Ekol Logistics and its plans to expand road transport services along the Mediterranean ferry network reflect the company's commitment to strengthening its presence in the region. With Turkey's growing role as a manufacturing hub for Europe, DFDS is well-positioned to capitalize on the expected 14% growth in the transport sector between Turkey and Europe by 2028.
