In the world of photography, preserving and enhancing old photos is a cherished pursuit. Digital Camera World, the world's favourite photography magazine, offers valuable insights on this subject. Mike Harris, the How To Editor at Digital Camera World, provides a step-by-step guide on how to use Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) filter in Adobe Photoshop to breathe new life into your old JPEG photos.

Here's a simplified version of Harris's guide:

  1. Open the JPEG image in Photoshop: Launch Photoshop and open your old JPEG photo via File > Open.
  2. Apply Camera Raw filter: With the photo layer selected, go to the menu: Filter > Camera Raw Filter. This will open the Camera Raw interface where you can apply advanced enhancements to your image.
  3. Enhance resolution with Super Resolution in Camera Raw: While in Camera Raw Filter, right-click the image preview. Select the Enhance... option. In the dialog, check Super Resolution to enlarge the image by doubling width and height (quadrupling total pixels) while improving image quality using Adobe’s AI algorithms. Click Enhance and wait for the process to complete.
  4. Adjust detail and noise: Use the sliders in Camera Raw for sharpening, noise reduction, and texture enhancement to bring out details in the old photo. Tweak exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, clarity, dehaze, and vibrance to improve faded or dull areas.
  5. Finalize and save: After adjustments, click OK in Camera Raw Filter to apply changes. Save the enhanced photo in desired format (File > Save As), preferably as a new JPEG or TIFF to preserve original.

This method combines the AI-powered Super Resolution to enlarge and enhance resolution with classical Camera Raw editing tools to improve color, contrast, and sharpness on old JPEG images. Applying the filter non-destructively inside Photoshop preserves flexibility for additional edits.
