Discussions on Games Inbox: Mirror's Edge 2 anticipation, musings on The Witness, and Astebreed PS4 releases

Tonight's Inbox reveals the origin of the double jump, as one reader asks for fighting game recommendations.

Jump Start

I've always been curious about which game first introduced the double jump. I don't mean special cases like Sonic 3's lightning shield or Alucard's elixir, but the first game that made it a standard feature for their characters. Even if it's a Hot Topic that's too specific, I'd be curious to hear the answer!

Liam

**GC: We think that's a little specific for a Hot Topic. Still, the answer is little-known coin-op Dragon Buster from 1984, but we don't imagine many people would remember it.

Fighting Chance

I enjoy a one-on-one fighter and I was hoping for recommendations. I prefer simpler fighters like Tekken but I'll give the more strategic types like Street Fighter IV a go. I own a Wii U and PlayStation 4 and was considering Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for Wii U or Dead Or Alive 5 for PS4. I've never played any Dead Or Alive games - are they simple or complex? Which do you recommend?

TheCRASSman (PSN ID/NN ID)

**GC: Neither is particularly complex, though Dead Or Alive 5 may be more so. Mortal Kombat is quite basic compared to the 2D fighters and is a good place to start. Street Fighter IV isn't as difficult as some might think.

Halo's Shadow

Not trying to start a debate, but I found the original Halo repetitive and dull with some poor level design. The regenerating health and two-weapon limit don't appeal to me either. I much preferred Halo 2, with its better set pieces and protagonist swapping. I'm with GC on GoldenEye too; no matter how unattractive it may seem on HDTVs, the fun is still there. The single-player design has aged well too.

China Games

I'm moving to China soon and I'm wondering about the gaming situation there. My PlayStation 3 isn't traveling, so I was considering a portable system like the PS Vita, but it seems dead on arrival. I don't know if consoles are widely available there or in English, but I'm considering a Wii U since I've heard good things about its recent games. What do you suggest?

JK47

**GC: We don't think the Wii U has officially launched in China yet, so you'll have to stick with imports. The recent PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases are widely available, though.

Bayonette Truth

Just unlocked the Chain Chomp from the Mario games in Bayonetta 2 and it is awesome! I'm nearly done with my fourth playthrough of this fantastic game and I can't wait for more. I'm sad that it didn't get more love in recent Hot Topics.

The Witness Update

I've heard nothing about The Witness in a while. Is it still happening? What's taking so long? I was most excited for it at the PlayStation 4 reveal. The development blog is updated regularly and it seems nearly finished.

WhiteKnightDave (VG IGN)

**GC: It's still supposed to be out this year, but it's been a while since we've heard anything new.

No More Hype

Don't fall for the hype! Wait for day two, or even week four, to get the game at a discount. Many developers need our money more than others, and most games become redundant quickly. Which retro games do you still play today that have held up well?

8Bit Onwards

**GC: We missed something here - who is Chunk and Mr D?

  1. The double jump feature, which is now common in many games, was reportedly first introduced in the little-known coin-op game Dragon Buster from 1984.
  2. For those seeking one-on-one fighters on their Wii U or PlayStation 4, Dead Or Alive 5 offers a more complex gameplay compared to Tekken Tag Tournament 2, but both games are considered simpler compared to Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter IV.
  3. As for gaming in China, it might be difficult to find consoles that are widely available in English. However, recent releases of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are widely available, and the Wii U has not officially launched in China yet.
Evening Inbox discloses the game that pioneered the double jump, while another reader searches for suggestions in the realm of combat games.
