Electric SUV battery proven capable in Brazil, withstanding pressure equivalent to a 36-ton tank.
In a jaw-dropping safety demo, the electric SUV Galaxy EX5 from Geely took the world by storm, surviving an extreme compression test where a colossal 36-ton tank crunched down on its Aegis Gold Brick battery.
Manufacturers boasted that the pressure applied was a whopping 1.8 times more than the new national battery safety standards in China. To everyone's astonishment, there was no fire, explosion, or thermal runaway — not even a hint of a problem in the battery or individual cells.
The test simulated a severe external impact: the tank repeatedly ran over the battery, crushing loose cells and even a module of 10 cells. Crazily enough, the battery structure remained as sound as a nut, showing no bulges, leaks, or signs of giving up under the intense pressure.
Tougher Safety Standards Ahead
In March, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced new safety requirements for electric vehicle batteries, effective from July 1, 2026. Already, the Aegis Gold Brick system from Geely meets these new criteria, making it one of the first batteries in the industry to receive full certification.
What's Inside the Geely Battery?
The Aegis Gold Brick boasts an impressive design, featuring a short length, greater thickness, low internal resistance, and minimal heat generation. It's also equipped with a dual-layer separator coated in heat-resistant aluminum oxide to prevent puncture-related ruptures.
On top of that, the battery offers IP68 and IPX9K protection, utilizes CTB (Cell To Body) technology, boasts energy absorption grid structures with four transverse sections, and packs a 2.6 mm thick lower plate in a sandwich shape. The design uniquely incorporates liquid-electric separation, electrical insulation, heat dissipation, and multiple layers of protection.
Geely went above and beyond the national standards, conducting 36 extreme scenarios, 23 of which surpassed official requirements.
This year, the brand plans to unveil its Global Safety Testing Center—the world's largest automotive testing laboratory.
Geely in Brazil
The EX5 was confirmed for the Brazilian market in April, making it the first Geely model to grace our shores. With a medium size, it measures 4.62 m in length, 1.90 m in width, and 1.67 m in height, boasting a wheelbase of 2.75 m.
Here in Brazil, the Galaxy EX5 will debut with an electric motor of 218 hp and 32.6 kgfm of torque. The single 60.2 kWh battery promises up to 530 km of range in Chinese cycle — a figure more optimistic than the Inmetro standard. Standard features include a panoramic sunroof, a complete ADAS package, and LED headlights.
Sales will be made in partnership with Renault, already collaborating with Geely in other markets. Initially, the EX5 will be imported from China. In the future, production of Chinese hybrids and electric vehicles will take place at Renault's factory in São José dos Pinhais (PR).
