Expanded Plug-in Van and Truck Financial Incentive Continues until 2027 by Government
The UK government has announced an extension of the Plug-in Van and Truck Grant, a scheme designed to support businesses in transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs). The grant, which was initially launched in 2012 for vans and 2016 for trucks, will now continue until at least 2027[1][2].
Current grant levels remain the same, offering discounts of up to £2,500 for small vans, £5,000 for large vans, £16,000 for small trucks, and £25,000 for large trucks[3]. However, the exact grant amounts for the 2026-2027 financial year have not yet been announced and will be confirmed later[4][5].
Jambu Palaniappan, CEO of Checkatrade, welcomed the extension, stating that it provides real, practical support for tradespeople across the UK[6]. He also highlighted that trucks and vans are responsible for more than a third of the CO2 created on UK roads[7].
The extension of the grant is a part of the government's efforts to tackle one of the UK's largest sources of emissions: commercial transport[8]. It is expected to make the electric transition for the UK's logistics sector "smoother"[9].
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood stated that the extension of these grants is another decisive step to power Britain's transition to cleaner transport[2]. The grant extension is also part of a £650 million fund the government is spending to increase EV uptake and improve the UK's charging infrastructure[10].
The extension of the grant is anticipated to create jobs in the UK and free businesses from charges like the ULEZ (Ultra-Low Emission Zone)[11]. Every electric vehicle (EV) on the UK's roads is expected to contribute to healthier communities[12].
The government's stated goal is to keep the UK on track to becoming a clean energy superpower with the extension of the grant[13]. The extension also includes the Electric Car Grant, which was announced earlier this month[14].

The government's extension of the Plug-in Van and Truck Grant, aimed at supporting businesses in transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), aligns with their goal of boosting technology in the environmental-science field, considering the advantages EVs offer in reducing CO2 emissions. With the prolonged grant, the UK is taking decisive steps towards achieving its goal of becoming a clean energy superpower, particularly in the commercial transport sector.
