Fibre optic development is commencing in Buchenbach
In a significant move towards modernizing the region's infrastructure, the district of Falkensteig near Buchenbach is set to undergo an expansion of its fiber optic networks. This development, announced by the district administrator, Dr. Christian Ante, marks the 30th construction start in the district.
The expansion, initiated on September 18, 2025, will span approximately 53 kilometers within the municipality, aiming to bring high-speed internet to previously underserved areas. The project, estimated to cost around 15 million euros, is primarily funded by federal and state funds, with 90% of the construction costs covered.
The broadband operator for Falkensteig will be the Breitband Breisgau-Black Forest Association (ZVBBH), who will take over operation of the network once the deep construction work is completed. Vodafone will operate the network in Falkensteig, but ownership will remain with the Breitband Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald Association.
The expansion is considered a crucial step for the future by Buchenbach's mayor, Ralf Kaiser, who believes it will ensure that both Buchenbach and all its districts remain future-proof. The modern and high-performance infrastructure created by the expansion will provide a solid foundation for the district's growth and development.
Commuters using the B31 road towards the Hochschwarzwald and Dreisamtal regions may face traffic restrictions due to the construction. The construction manager did not specify the exact dates for these restrictions, but the Badische Zeitung reported warnings about possible closures before the start of construction.
Network activation in Falkensteig is planned for the first half of 2028. The construction is expected to be completed by fall 2027, ensuring that Falkensteig remains connected and forward-thinking, in line with the rest of the district. This fiber optic expansion in Falkensteig is part of a larger initiative to bring modern infrastructure to rural areas, bridging the digital divide and promoting economic growth.
