Food delivery services Uber Eats and DoorDash are expanding collaborations with local grocery stores nationwide in the United States.
In the realm of online grocery shopping, two major players, Uber Eats and DoorDash, are making significant strides by partnering with both local and national retailers.
Uber Eats, based in Pacoima, California, has recently formed a partnership with Vallarta Supermarkets, one of the top 100 retailers in North America according to The PG 100. This move is part of Uber Eats' efforts to increase customers' access to local and regional stores. Vallarta, which operates stores throughout various counties in California and employs over 8,000 team members, will offer a wide range of products to Uber Eats customers.
Meanwhile, DoorDash continues to dominate the U.S. food delivery market with about 60-65% market share. The platform has expanded its grocery delivery offerings through strategic acquisitions and technology investments. One of DoorDash's notable partnerships includes Big Y Foods, a top 100 retailer in North America, ranked No. 73 on The PG 100. Big Y Foods, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, with 94 locations and over 10,000 associates.
Uber Eats has also partnered with Dollar General to offer a wide range of affordable essentials and food items nationwide, enhancing convenience and delivery speed for customers. While specific partnerships with Citarella and Gelson’s were not found in the latest search results, both platforms are known for integrating local grocery stores alongside national retailers as part of their grocery delivery expansion strategies.
DoorDash's Q1 2025 saw a record number of consumers ordering groceries from the platform. The addition of new partners like Vallarta and Big Y Foods expands DoorDash's catalog to over 11 million grocery and retail products. DoorDash's DashPass membership program now includes Big Y Foods and Vallarta, offering $0 delivery fees, reduced service fees, and exclusive benefits on eligible orders from thousands of restaurants, grocery, and convenience stores across the country.
James Randall, of Memphis-based Superlo Foods, noted that Uber has been fantastic to work with. Integrations with Uber Eats have been difficult, but Uber meets partners where they are and adapts to their needs. Both platforms are investing in technology, like AI for smart pricing and autonomous delivery methods, to improve grocery delivery efficiency and customer experience.
DoorDash has also partnered with Gordon Food Service, which has locations across the Midwest, Florida, and Texas. As the competition between these two giants heats up, it's clear that they are committed to providing customers with a diverse range of grocery options, making online shopping more convenient than ever.
Uber Eats' partnership with Vallarta Supermarkets broadens their offerings beyond food-and-drink, expanding into lifestyle products through regional stores. Meanwhile, DoorDash's strategy includes technology investments, aiming to simplify grocery shopping with AI and autonomous delivery, offering a tech-friendly lifestyle to customers.
