Park co-founded Tuft & Needle, which merged with Serta Simmons Bedding in 2018, and Marino served as the first employee and head of product development at the same company. As for Leo, the ethically-minded “hacker” brings his own consumer experiences to the table, having wrestled with the confusing world of mattress shopping after college.
In an email to Retail Dive, Leo shared his frustrations with the current state of the industry: "Despite the promises and marketing gimmicks, it's just the same old, same old. It's getting old and people are wising up."
As the home sector grapples with challenges, the market for mattresses remains a mixed bag. The mattress space has become saturated, making it difficult for shoppers to navigate the excess of brands and models. As the pandemic boosted sales for home goods, the market is currently experiencing a decline in demand and sales. According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, sales in the home category have steadily dropped for several months.
Notably, Casper, Purple, and Tuft & Needle, once disruptors in the mattress industry, have faced their fair share of challenges as well. In 2021, Casper was acquired by Durational Capital Management, shifting its focus to profitability and away from its previous growth-at-all-costs strategy. Purple, which has faced financial difficulties, has started to cater to a higher-end consumer and recently introduced two premium collections. And even Tuft & Needle lost sight of its original mission post-merger, according to Park, adopting industry norms like added extravagant features and inflated prices.
