Revamped Perspective: Alienware's Grand Slam in HDR Monitoring

Step into the world of stunning visuals with the Alienware AW2725Q monitor, known for its top-notch HDR performance. Let's dive right into this badass piece of tech and see what makes it shine.

This baby supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, offering automatic signal switching to keep you covered. HDR10 comes equipped with six extra picture modes, while Dolby Vision needs a toggle in the OSD to get activated.

Shining Bright: HDR Light Show

The AW2725Q's HDR brightness is on par with the competition and flaunts variable brightness to nail a higher peak compared to Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). In the 25% window tests, the Dough and Asus panels crank things up a tad, but the highlight peaks reach approximately 1,000 nits in every case. This test was conducted in the True Black mode. There's a preset called Peak 1000, but it doesn't boost the peak output. It tweaks the Electro-Optical Transfer Function (EOTF) curve to prioritize highlights, but at the expense of some hidden details.

Gray Matters: Shadows and Highlights

True Black mode is your best bet for all HDR10 content. The grayscale tracking is flawless, as all errors are below 3dE. No fiddling is necessary here. The EOTF aligns almost perfectly, with a smooth transition to tone mapping at 60% brightness. This corresponds with the AW2725Q's measured black and white levels, ensuring that all details remain visible across the full tonal range.

The AW2725Q's gamut tracking is like a textbook example of precision. All six colors stay put on their hue lines, with only minor oversaturation in red, magenta, and blue. This performance is outstanding, putting it among the best charts seen so far. In the BT.2020 test, the AW2725Q stays the course with just slight oversaturation before hitting a wall at 90% red, 75% green, and 95% blue. This is outstanding output.

Bottom Line: The AW2725Q takes the crown in HDR contrast, displaying colors with precision and EOTF accuracy that leave many HDR monitors in the dust. Fancy playing the latest games like Doom Eternal? You won't have to tinker with HDR game settings to catch every detail. The colors pop, and intra-image contrast is out of this world. To sum it up, this is one of the best HDR monitors I've tested.
