Germany's Climate Plan: Boosting Natural Carbon Storage, Restructuring Forests
The federal government is pushing ahead with plans to boost climate protection, focusing on farmers and land use. Environment Minister Carsten Schneider has presented a proposal for the further development of the 'Action Program Natural Climate Protection', aiming to restructure forests and protect moors to better store CO2 and buffer extreme weather.
The action program, containing 41 measures, focuses on forests, moors, and soils. Key measures include rewetting former moors to restore their natural climate-regulating abilities, converting pure coniferous forests into mixed forests to improve biodiversity and resilience, and reducing water losses in forests to enhance their carbon storage capacity.
The government plans to fund the rewetting of moors and compensate farmers' income losses for up to seven years. Schneider expressed optimism about working together with farmers and forest owners to achieve these goals. The action program is subject to further discussion with farmers and other stakeholders to ensure its success and fairness.
The government aims to restructure 100,000 hectares of forest per year, with light regions proposed for the further development of the Nature Climate Protection Action Program including urban areas like Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart. Farmers are required to make adjustments and adopt new farming methods to meet national climate goals, with the government committed to supporting them through this transition.
