Global Recognition for Pioneering Achievements in Media and Technology at IBC2025 Innovation Awards
In the bustling city of Amsterdam, the annual IBC Innovation Awards ceremony took place at RAI Amsterdam, celebrating significant achievements in content creation and delivery, social impact, and sustainability. This year's event was a testament to the relentless pursuit of innovation in the broadcasting industry.
One of the standout winners was the Mobile Justice app, developed in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union. This mobile application won in the Social Impact category for enabling citizens to document law enforcement encounters in real-time and upload evidence for review.
Another notable innovation was the energy-efficient UHD upscaling technology, developed by SK Telecom and Pixtree. This technology, integrated into their IPTV service (Btv) live channels, serves 6.7 million subscribers and achieved an impressive 80% reduction in energy consumption. This reduction not only improves the efficiency of live broadcasting but also prevents 3,728 tons CO2eq emissions annually, making it a significant contribution to sustainability in the broadcasting industry.
SK Telecom's energy-efficient UHD upscaling technology is a prime example of technological innovation for a more sustainable future in broadcasting. The novel approach prioritizes energy efficiency while maintaining high-quality UHD streaming. This technology is a testament to SK Telecom's commitment to sustainability, as demonstrated by Fergal Ringrose, the Chair of the Innovation Awards Jury.
The IBC Accelerator Project of the Year 2024 was awarded to the project "Evolution of the Control Room – Leveraging XR, Voice, AI & HTML-Based Graphics Solutions." This consortium-led initiative, including ITN, BBC, TV2 Denmark, YLE, EBU, Channel 4, and other leading media and academic institutions, developed advanced XR- and AI-powered solutions for remote and collaborative live production workflows.
In the Content Creation category, Deep Ocean: Kingdom of the Coelacanth, produced by NHK Japan, won for capturing the world's first-ever video footage of a group of coelacanths in 8K and 22.2 sound.
SVT-AV1, developed by Alliance for Open Media, Intel, and Meta, won in the Content Everywhere category for making video streaming viable on low-end mobile devices and low-bandwidth networks.
Sky's MediaMesh also received an award in the Content Distribution category for integrating systems and workflows of broadcasters across Europe.
The IBC2025 Innovation Awards ceremony recognised a variety of innovative projects from around the globe, with recipients representing four continents. These awards serve as a reminder of the constant evolution and advancement in the broadcasting industry, pushing boundaries and setting new standards for sustainability, efficiency, and quality.
