This upgrade intends to make those lengthy email exchanges less daunting. By automatically generating summaries at the top of your emails, you can catch the main gist without going through a tedious scroll-a-thon.
But not every email makes the cut - promotional offers and receipts are out. Instead, Gemini will only roll out a Summary card when it detects a lengthy email thread or several replies that need condensing.
In Sync and On-the-Go
These Summary cards will refresh in real-time as new replies arrive, ensuring you're never late to the conversation. At present, they only work with English emails and require smart features enabled in Gmail, Chat, Meet, and across your Google Workspace.
This feature is a product of Google's AI-powered summaries that debuted last year alongside Gemini side panels in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Gmail. Previously, you had to manually tap "Summarize this email" to get the lowdown. Now, that summary appears on its own at the top when you open an email thread.
Get Ahead of the Game
While long email threads might be a common sight, Gemini's summaries might prove to be a lifesaver. They'll only show up when Gemini deems it necessary, but if they start feeling intrusive, you can turn them off. Just remember that disabling all Gemini features in Gmail settings is required to make that happen.
If you're using Gmail through a school or company account, check with your admin as to whether these smart features are enabled. By default, they may be turned off in regions like Europe and Japan due to local regulations.

- For Workspace/Enterprise Accounts: Check with your admin to enable the service. If you're an admin, navigate to the Google Admin console, expand the Generative AI section, choose Gemini, and set the Service status to ON for everyone.
- For Google One AI Premium (Personal Accounts): Go to Gemini’s website or your Google One account, navigate to Settings, and select Extensions. Turn on the toggle for Google Workspace extensions.
- For All Users: Open Gmail on your Android or iOS device - summary cards should appear for supported emails once enabled.
- With the AI-powered summaries by Gemini now available on your Gmail mobile app, you can efficiently manage your email threads containing smartphones or gadgets, allowing you to skim through them quickly without delving into lengthy details.
- If you enable the real-time summaries feature in your Google Workspace, you'll stay on top of your emails discussing the latest technological advancements and devices like smartphones, as these summaries will refresh automatically as new replies arrive.
