Google Drive's "Suggested Files" Widget Gets a Fresh Look with M3 Expressive Redesign

Google Drive has unveiled an updated version of its "Suggested Files" widget for Android devices, adopting the Material 3 Expressive design language. The redesign aims to provide a more unified and modern appearance, aligning with Google's broader rollout of UI updates across its applications.

The key changes in the M3 Expressive redesign include:

  1. The widget is now a single rounded rectangle, moving away from the old design’s visually divided top (search) and bottom (file list) sections.
  2. The top-left corner features the "Drive" label and app logo.
  3. Pill-shaped buttons have been added at the right for quickly uploading files and starting searches (if the widget is wide enough).
  4. The list below now displays up to 10 suggested files (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.), each placed in its own container.
  5. The smallest widget layout is a 3×2 grid cells, but it can be resized to fill the entire homescreen.

These changes emphasize rounded shapes, containerized elements, and streamlined access to core actions, which are the hallmarks of the Material 3 Expressive design language.

The file upload and video player on Google Drive for Android have also been redesigned to match the new aesthetic. The M3 Expressive widget redesign is being rolled out with version 2.25.306.6 of Google Drive for Android.

It's worth noting that the new M3 Expressive design language for Google Drive widgets was implemented before its official announcement. The quick actions widget on Google Drive, along with Google Keep, was updated with M3 Expressive in April.

Additionally, Google Drive for desktop has been redesigned, adding a centralized interface. The new M3 Expressive widget is not limited in size, allowing it to take up the entire homescreen.

An interesting new feature in Google Drive is the 'Catch me up' command available in Gemini. This command helps users quickly catch up on their recent activities within the app.

Lastly, it's important to mention that the account picker may take a moment to appear after placing the M3 Expressive widget on the homescreen.

This redesign is part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve the user experience across its applications, making them more intuitive and visually appealing.

Technology plays a significant role in the revamp of Google Drive's widget on Android, as the Material 3 Expressive design language is being implemented. The new design focus on rounded shapes, containerized elements, and streamlined access to core actions, a reflection of advancements in digital interfaces.
