Google Signs EU AI Code of Practice Ahead of Stricter Regulations

Google has agreed to sign the EU's voluntary code of practice for artificial intelligence, aligning itself with Europe's push for safer, ethical, and fair AI. This move comes just days before stricter rules under the EU AI Act are set to kick in on August 2. The EU AI Act, which came into force in August 2024, requires providers and developers of high-risk AI systems to comply within 12 months. These include certain medical devices class IIa or higher, particularly in radiology. Google's decision to sign the code of practice signals cooperation with these regulations, although some hesitation is evident. The code commits AI companies to sharing clear documentation, avoiding pirated content, and respecting copyright owners. It is part of Europe's effort to set the pace for AI regulation, focusing on general-purpose AI models with systemic risk. Companies like Google, Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI are expected to be affected. While these regulations could raise costs and slow down development, they aim to provide better protection for users. Google's signing of the EU's AI code indicates a willingness to work with Europe's AI regulations. However, Meta has refused to sign, arguing that Europe is 'heading down the wrong path on AI'. The EU AI Act, set to fully enforce in August 2025, seeks to keep artificial intelligence safe, ethical, and fair, marking a significant step in global AI governance.
