Google's AI assistant, ChatGPT, competes with Google Assistant for default position on Android devices

In the ever-evolving world of technology, the future of default assistant apps is trending towards conversational AI. This shift is not lost on major tech giants, as they scramble to upgrade their AI offerings to stay ahead of the curve.

Whispers suggest a major AI upgrade for Siri on the iPhone 16, which could potentially close the gap between Siri and modern chatbots. Apple's upcoming iOS 18 might feature an AI-infused system for iPhones, aiming to keep pace with the AI-driven competition. However, Siri, Apple's default assistant, is currently perceived as outdated compared to modern chatbots. If Siri does not adapt to the changing landscape of AI assistants, it risks being left behind.

Meanwhile, Google is positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the AI assistant market. The tech giant has unveiled "Gemini", a super-powered AI model, to compete with OpenAI's GPT-4. Google's CEO Sundar Pichai claims that Gemini has surpassed ChatGPT in capabilities and aims to reach 500 million users by the end of 2025.

While Android users can set ChatGPT or other AI assistants (like Perplexity AI) as their default, these alternatives lack deep system integrations such as smart home control, calendar access, music playback, and cannot respond to the “Hey Google” wake command, which remains tied to Gemini. Google emphasizes its superior integration with the Android ecosystem and continuous improvements in AI reliability and speed.

Google's plan to compete involves advancing its own AI assistant, Gemini Advanced, which integrates real-time internet access, multimodal capabilities (image analysis, voice input/output), and deep integration with Google services like Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and smart home controls to maintain its edge over rivals like ChatGPT Plus.

Samsung and Motorola are exploring partnerships with AI assistants like Perplexity for Android devices, indicating that while Google maintains tight control over its default assistant experience, choices are expanding but with significant trade-offs regarding functionality and integration.

The AI assistant market is becoming increasingly competitive, with various companies developing advanced chatbots. ChatGPT, a popular AI chatbot, is available on both Android and iOS. Recently, there have been rumours that ChatGPT might soon join the ranks of official Android assistants, potentially replacing Google Assistant on some devices. Microsoft's Copilot app offers similar chatbot skills on both Android and iOS.

The introduction of AI-infused systems in default assistants could disrupt the traditional tech market. As the AI assistant wars become more chatty, it remains to be seen who will emerge as the dominant player in this exciting and dynamic field.
