In a significant move for mobile mapping, Apple's own mapping application, Apple Maps, was replaced as the default mapping application on the iPhone 5 by the latest version of Google Maps. This change was announced alongside the unveiling of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 in September.

Google's new map app, designed to combine the comprehensiveness and accuracy of Google Maps with an easier-to-use interface, is now accessible to iPhone 5 users. The application features information on over 80 million searchable businesses and points of interest, including addresses, opening hours, ratings, reviews, images, and directions.

One of the standout features of the new Google Maps app is the ability to rotate vector-based 2D and 3D map views by tilting the phone, making navigation more intuitive and immersive. The application is available through Apple's App Store.

Daniel Graf, director of Google Maps for mobile, announced the release of the new Google Maps application in an official blog post. However, the search results do not provide the name of the director who announced the new version of the maps application for Apple's App Store.

The launch of the latest version of Google Maps comes after Apple admitted to having 'screwed up' Apple Maps, with users finding numerous errors within the application. The new Google Maps app is compatible with the iPhone and fourth-generation iPod Touch running iOS 5.1 and higher, making it accessible to a wide range of Apple device users.

Moreover, the Google Maps application takes advantage of the iPhone 5's longer 4-inch display, providing a more pleasing and user-friendly experience. With its improved features and user-friendly design, Google's new map app is set to make a significant impact on the mobile mapping landscape.
