GPT-5 Integration with Apple Devices: Enhancing Siri and AI Functionalities
Apple has announced that the newest foundational model for OpenAI's ChatGPT, named GPT-5, will be integrated into Apple Intelligence, enhancing Siri and related AI features. This integration is scheduled to roll out with the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26, which are expected to go live around September or October.
The GPT-5 support will be available on iPhone 15 Pro and later models, all iPhone 16 models (including the 16e), as well as on compatible iPads and Mac models running iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26. When these new operating systems go live, GPT-5 will be available through Apple Intelligence and Siri on MacBooks and iPads. Users can also download the ChatGPT iOS app separately.
This integration will provide several benefits. Users can expect smarter Siri with better reasoning, voice interaction, and video perception. Enhanced Apple Intelligence features, including writing tools and visual intelligence (using the device’s camera), will also be a part of the upgrade. Advanced multimodal capabilities going beyond GPT-4o, which is currently in use, will be another advantage. Custom personalities and an enhanced voice mode within Apple Intelligence are also expected.
With the upgrade, users of these newer Apple devices will experience more powerful AI assistance through Siri and Apple Intelligence functionalities powered by GPT-5 starting with the iOS 26 (and equivalent iPad and MacOS) software update. The new iOS is anticipated to launch around the same time as the iPhone 17 in September.
Apple hasn't specified all devices compatible with GPT-5, but it's expected that devices capable of using Apple Intelligence will work. It's worth noting that some older Apple devices do not support Apple Intelligence.
Interestingly, the new GPT-5 model will power many of Apple's AI tools, just as ChatGPT powers Microsoft's Copilot suite of AI features. OpenAI has direct integration with both Apple and Windows, indicating a growing collaboration between these tech giants in the realm of AI.
The beta versions of the OS updates are available now for developers, allowing them to test and prepare their applications for the upcoming changes. Users are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates on the official release dates and compatible devices for GPT-5 integration with Apple devices.
