In a remarkable turn of events, the cryptocurrency community has come together to support a significant grant program focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Existential Safety. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has expressed his gratitude to the Shiba Inu (SHIB) community for funding his AI Grant program.

Last year, the anonymous developers of Shiba Inu gifted 50% of the total supply of SHIB tokens to Buterin, worth approximately $6 billion at the time. A portion of this donation was used to establish the Vitalik Buterin Ph.D. Fellowship in AI Existential Safety. The funding for this fellowship in 2022 was provided by Open Philanthropy.

The fellowship is intended for students who intend to work on AI existential safety research and are starting Ph.D. programs in the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada in 2022. Each student selected for the fellowship will receive up to $40,000 in tuition, fees, and a stipend for their Ph.D. program, as well as a $10,000 fund for research-related expenses such as travel and computing. An additional postdoctoral fellowship will provide funding for one student with an annual stipend of $80,000 and a fund of up to $10,000.

The grant program, known as the Vitalik Buterin Ph.D. Fellowship in AI Existential Safety, will fund eight students for five years of their Ph.D., with the possibility of extension in funding. However, no information has been provided about the status of the fellowship program or any changes since Buterin's SHIB donation.

In May 2021, Buterin burned 90% of his Shiba token (SHIB), leaving him with a smaller stake in the cryptocurrency. At the time of writing, Shiba Inu is trading at a price of $0.00001169.

Buterin also donated 500 ETH and 50 trillion SHIB worth over $1.2B to India's COVID-19 relief fund in May 2021. The remaining SHIB from his donation was used to establish the Vitalik Buterin Ph.D. Fellowship in AI Existential Safety.

In response to a tweet about the first batch of fellowship grant winners, Buterin wrote, expressing his gratitude to the Shiba Inu community. Unfortunately, no information has been provided about any new grant winners or Vitalik Buterin's response to them. Additionally, no information has been disclosed about any other uses or destinations of Vitalik Buterin's SHIB donation.

Existing Ph.D. students who would not otherwise have funding to work on AI existential safety research are also eligible for this grant fellowship. The fellowship aims to support students pursuing research in this critical area, contributing to the advancement of AI safety and the reduction of potential risks associated with its development.
