Guide on Investing in ChatGPT, the Chatbot Developed by OpenAI
In the dynamic world of technology, the generative AI sector is projected to experience significant growth in the coming years. According to recent market analyses, the market size of this sector is expected to range between approximately $600 billion to over $1 trillion by 2032, with compound annual growth rates (CAGR) of around 36-48% during the forecast period, roughly spanning 2025 to 2032.
| Source | Market Size in 2024/2025 | Projected Market Size in 2032 | CAGR (%) | |-----------------------------------|--------------------------|------------------------------|--------------------| | OpenPR/DataM Intelligence [1] | $45.56 billion (2024) | $1,022.41 billion | 47.53% (2025-2032) | | Fortune Business Insights [2] | $67 billion (2024) | $967.65 billion | ~40% (2024-2032) | | Persistence Market Research [3] | $69.4 billion (2025) | $603.7 billion | 36.2% (2025-2032) |
These projections are driven by advances in large language models, expanding enterprise automation, and broader adoption across sectors such as content creation, healthcare, finance, and software development. The generative AI sector is often identified as the fastest-growing technology segment within the broader artificial intelligence market, which itself is forecasted to reach over $2.4 trillion by 2032.
However, the AI landscape is not without its challenges. OpenAI, a key player in the generative AI sector, has been embroiled in a series of controversies and lawsuits. In 2024, an OpenAI researcher, Suchir Balaji, blew the whistle on the company, reporting that it was violating US copyright laws. This was followed by the discovery that ChatGPT for macOS was breaching Apple's security rules by storing data as plain text rather than encryption.
In response to these issues, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Pro subscriptions targeting engineers and academics for $200 monthly in December 2024. The company also faced competition with the recent release of Chinese startup DeepSeek's AI assistant, which could potentially pose a problem for OpenAI and the US tech industry as a whole.
The tech can be used to spread misinformation, carry out phishing email scams, or write malicious code, raising concerns about its ethical and legal implications. To address these concerns, multiple news outlets, including the New York Times, have launched copyright lawsuits against OpenAI. Some of the plaintiffs in these lawsuits are also seeking damages from Microsoft, which has reportedly invested nearly $14 billion in OpenAI to help the small tech firm create its ultra-powerful AI chatbot.
The Authors Guild, a group of prominent authors, launched a class-action lawsuit against OpenAI, calling for a licensing system that would allow authors to opt out of having their books used to train AI. The lawsuit requires AI companies to pay for the material they do use.
Despite these challenges, OpenAI has continued to innovate. In March 2023, the company released a more powerful version of ChatGPT called GPT-4, which can accept visual inputs, is much more precise, and can display a higher level of expertise in various subjects. OpenAI launched Chat GPT-4o in May 2024, which has done away with the lagging response time afflicting GPT-4, and allows users to interrupt the chatbot to pose a new query to modify responses.
In June 2025, the US Department of Defense awarded a $200 million contract to OpenAI to provide AI tools for addressing national security challenges. The company completed a new round of funding totaling $40 billion in late March 2025, projected to bring its valuation to $300 billion.
As the generative AI market expands, it is expected to face both opportunities and challenges. The global AI market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.2 percent to reach $3.68 trillion by 2034, with generative AI seeing a CAGR of 39.6 percent through 2032. The future of this sector will be shaped by the balance between innovation, regulation, and ethical considerations.

The generative AI sector's growth in finance and investing is promising, as the market size is anticipated to range from $600 billion to over $1 trillion by 2032, a 36-48% CAGR, according to various market analyses. However, ethical and legal implications concerning technologies like generative AI and its potential misuse in spreading misinformation or creating malicious code are raising concerns, leading to copyright lawsuits against companies like OpenAI.
