Halle (Saale) city is advancing its fiber optic network expansion
Halle (Saale) to Expand Fiber Optic Infrastructure with Telecom Companies
In a significant move towards digital advancement, Mayor Dr. Alexander Vogt of Halle (Saale) signed a cooperation agreement with five telecommunications companies on September 17, 2025. The agreement aims to expand the city's fiber optic infrastructure, a crucial step towards modern education, economic growth, and improved quality of life.
Dr. Lydia Huskens, Minister for Infrastructure and Digitalization of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, was present at the signing. Minister Huskens plans to supply all households and companies in Halle (Saale) with fiber optics by 2030, and has announced additional financial support for the implementation of further digital projects in the city.
The focus of the additional financial support is on the planned fiber optic expansion of the Ziegelwiese and the expansion of previously digitally underserved addresses in Halle-Ost. The state plans to financially support the connection of around 600 underserved addresses in Halle-Ost.
The telecommunications companies involved in the agreement have praised the good, goal-oriented, and customer-oriented cooperation with the city of Halle (Saale). They will contribute to the economic expansion of fiber optic connections without the need for further funding.
The lay of FTTH (Fiber to the Home) connections is a key aspect of economic fiber optic connections expansion. Gigabit connections via fiber optics enable data transfers of up to 1,000 Mbit/s, making them essential for mobile work and modern education.
As of now, fiber optic connections exist in more than 80% of the buildings in Halle (Saale), with 82% of private households already having a fiber optic connection. Statewide, around 43% of buildings have fiber optic connections, and nationwide, this is around 39%.
The economic expansion of fiber optic connections is scheduled to begin gradually from 2026. Minister Huskens plans to grant funding for the fiber optic expansion of the Ziegelwiese and the provision of free WLAN this year.
The state is providing significant support for the expansion of Halle (Saale)'s digital infrastructure, a move that, if consistently implemented, will enable the city to reach its target in a few years. This expansion is a testament to the commitment of both the state and the city towards a digital future.
