Hamburg Transforms Moorburg Coal Plant into Green Hydrogen Hub
Hamburg's energy landscape is set for a significant transformation. Since March 2023, Hamburger Energiewerke (HEnW) has acquired the Vattenfall Heizkraftwerk Moorburg GmbH, with plans to turn the former coal-fired power plant into a green hydrogen hub. The EU has shown support for this project, with funding from initiatives like the 'European Hydrogen Backbone' or the 'European Hydrogen Strategy' framework.
The Moorburg power plant, once a key player in Germany's coal industry, was shut down in July 2021 as part of the country's phase-out plan. Now, Hamburg aims to breathe new life into the site, transforming it into a green hydrogen hub. The city government has decided to co-finance the project, demonstrating its commitment to the transition.
HEnW's acquisition of the Moorburg site, including its property, buildings, and remaining components, has given the company more freedom to proceed with demolition and construction of new infrastructure. The site's location and connections make it an ideal spot for green hydrogen production, according to Hamburg's Minister of Economics, Dr. Melanie Leonhard. The EU's IPCEI funding will also support the construction of the electrolyzer at Moorburg, a crucial step in establishing the hydrogen hub.
With HEnW's acquisition and the city's co-financing, the Moorburg site is poised for a sustainable future. The EU's support, through funding initiatives like the 'European Hydrogen Backbone', will help turn this former coal-fired power plant into a green hydrogen hub, contributing to Hamburg's and Germany's clean energy goals.
