Hiking Enthusiasts Gather for Mafate X Hike: HOKA Utilizes Search and Rescue Technology
HOKA's New Trail Runner Features Life-Saving RECCO Reflectors
HOKA, a renowned outdoor brand, has taken a significant step in enhancing the safety of its latest trail runner, the Mafate X Hike. The shoe now comes equipped with RECCO reflectors, a feature that could potentially save lives in remote wilderness situations.
The RECCO reflector is a strip of foam that mirrors radio signals, aiding search-and-rescue (SAR) teams in locating individuals who may be lost and not easily visible from the air. This innovative technology has been incorporated into the Mafate X Hike, making it the wearer searchable in remote wilderness situations.
The Mafate X Hike is priced at $250, a $25 premium over the regular Mafate X. This makes it one of the outdoor brands that have started incorporating RECCO material into their hoka shoes. Brands such as Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Decathlon, SCARPA, and FORLOH have also embraced this life-saving feature.
Last year, the SCARPA Moraine, the first lightweight hiking boot to add the RECCO material, was reviewed, and now HOKA joins the ranks with its trail running shoe. For instance, Arc'teryx offers jackets with integrated RECCO reflectors, and Oakley has pants with integrated RECCO reflectors. Some Decathlon ski touring jackets also feature this technology.
However, it's essential to note that the RECCO reflector is not a failsafe for getting rescued if you get lost and injured in the backcountry. It's best to use RECCO in conjunction with an SOS communications device or a backcountry beacon.
RECCO only works when SAR or rescue teams have a specialized radar detector. Fortunately, RECCO is used by over 900 ski patrols and mountain rescue organizations in 32 countries.
The Mafate X Hike is designed for long haul adventures in remote wilderness. It features a neoprene collar and burrito tongue for added protection and debris securing. The shoe's design is based on the Hoka Mafate 5, a protective and capable shoe for long-distance trail running.
