HUB Ocean & IOC Workshop: Unlocking Shared Ocean Data for UN's Decade of Ocean Science
A recent workshop, hosted by HUB Ocean and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, explored the potential of shared ocean data. The event highlighted the untapped value of existing data and its role in addressing UN's Decade of Ocean Science challenges.
Private companies and vendors in the ocean space collect vast amounts of oceanographic and meteorological data. However, much of this data remains inaccessible due to legal, technical barriers, or perceived sensitivity. The workshop discussed tangible use cases that could deliver business value and require specific datasets.
One use case aims to enhance wind and wave forecasting, optimizing offshore operations and infrastructure designs. Another focuses on estimating the impact of extreme weather events on industrial assets and operations at sea. The third use case assesses the influence of coastal and shallow shelf processes on installations and coastal populations. Despite these promising applications, no specific companies in the maritime industry have been reported to have released non-sensitive data for improving ocean climate models or scientific research in 2023.
The workshop underscored the importance of data sharing in driving sustainable solutions and informed decision-making. Success stories, like BP's donation of high-resolution geophysical datasets, demonstrate the potential benefits. However, more companies need to recognize the value of their data and overcome barriers to sharing it publicly.
