India is making significant strides in its quest for clean energy, with hydrogen taking centre stage in the country's ambitious plans. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023, aims to transition India towards a hydrogen-based economy, making the country a global leader in green hydrogen production and export.

The world faces twin challenges: growing demand for energy and the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Recognising this, India has embarked on an ambitious journey to harness the power of hydrogen, one of the greenest and cleanest fuels available.

Last year, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) demonstrated a 100-watt oxygen-based fuel cell in space, with a 20-kilowatt version currently under testing. Beyond rockets, hydrogen has applications in aircraft, trains, automobiles, and fuel cells. In 2010-11, ISRO and Tata Motors collaborated to build a hydrogen fuel cell-powered bus, which was safely tested.

The success of space missions is a testament to ISRO's prowess. In January, India successfully launched the GSLV Mk III rocket, marking its 100th successful mission. Powered by a cryogenic stage using liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, the rocket underscores the potential of hydrogen in propulsion systems.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission is expected to create 6 lakh jobs by 2030 and attract total investments of over Rs. 8 lakh crores. The scheme for green hydrogen development focuses on indigenous technology, ensuring self-reliance in this critical sector.

Companies like BHEL and NTPC are now working on hydrogen systems and gas turbine engines. In June 2025, five hydrogen-powered buses began commercial operations, a significant step towards mainstreaming hydrogen technology.

The mission targets reducing dependence on fossil fuels and driving sustainability. With green hydrogen capacity expected to reach 5 million metric tons by 2030, India is well on its way to realising its vision of a cleaner, greener future.

ISRO Chairman V Narayanan states that hydrogen will play a transformative role in India's space missions, transportation, and clean energy future.
