Thyssenkrupp Nucera's scalum® alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) technology is making waves in the hydrogen industry, being recognized for its potential in driving future advancements. This modular technology, consisting of 300 high-efficiency cells per module, is aimed at improving large-scale green hydrogen production efficiency.

Dr. Christoph Noeres, Head of Green Hydrogen at thyssenkrupp nucera, stated that scalum is the heart of their alkaline water electrolysis and key to large-scale industrial plants. The technology focuses on addressing key technical challenges such as minimizing gas cross-over, which impacts both safety and efficiency, by employing precise regulation and advanced sensors. Scalum® also benefits from innovations in electrode materials, including a shift from rare and expensive materials to nickel-based electrodes that reduce cost while maintaining performance in AWE systems.

The technology is part of broader European research and industrial efforts to develop second-generation electrolysers that improve durability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness for hydrogen production. Critical components like membranes are a focus for extending system lifetime since they degrade over roughly 1,000 production hours currently.

Potential impacts of scalum® include enabling large-scale green hydrogen production, supporting regional hydrogen hubs such as those envisioned in the Netherlands. It also contributes to decarbonization efforts by producing hydrogen via renewable-powered electrolysis without CO₂ emissions. Additionally, cost reductions through improved materials and system efficiency make green hydrogen more competitive.
