Hyundai Plans to Expand Vehicle Lineup with Midsize Trucks and More Hybrid Models, Aims for Domestic Manufacturing
Hyundai Accelerates Green and Expansion Plans
Hyundai Motor Company is making significant strides in its commitment to a greener future and domestic production, as announced in a series of recent developments.
The South Korean automaker is aiming high with its electrification plans. By 2027, Hyundai targets a 30% cost reduction for its batteries, and by 2030, it plans to double its hybrid lineup, with more than 18 models on offer. Moreover, the company aims to design batteries with 15% higher energy density and 15% shorter charging times. In addition, Hyundai will begin sales of extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) in 2027.
Hyundai's electrified-vehicle sales target for 2030 is set at 3.3 million units, making up a significant portion of its overall sales goal of 5.5 million total global sales. The range of Hyundai's EREVs will exceed 600 miles (960 km), a testament to the company's focus on long-range electric mobility.
In terms of green production, Hyundai is also making strides. The company's global production capacity is set to grow by 1.2 million units in five years. A key part of this growth will come from Hyundai's BEV plant in Ulsan, South Korea, which will contribute 200,000 units to Hyundai's global production growth.
Hyundai's expansion in the United States is another significant part of its growth strategy. The company's Savannah, GA-area Metaplant is set to reach 500,000 total units of production capacity by 2028, following a $2.7 billion expansion that will create 3,000 direct and indirect jobs. Up to 10 nameplates are slated for assembly at the Georgia Metaplant.
Hyundai is also targeting more than 80% of vehicles sold in the U.S. to be assembled domestically by 2030. This commitment to domestic production is further evidenced by Hyundai's plans to introduce a midsize pickup truck to its U.S. lineup.
Hyundai's focus on performance is not forgotten. The company is set to launch its Pleos Connect next-gen infotainment system in the second quarter of 2026, as part of its accelerating transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Additionally, an N version of Hyundai's Ioniq 6 BEV sedan is planned, featuring three temperature optimization modes and signature N sensory engagement technologies.
Lastly, Hyundai is expanding its luxury brand, Genesis, into new markets in Europe and growing sales in current markets via new model introductions. The company targets 350,000 annual sales for Genesis by 2030. Hyundai's N brand is also set to grow by 2030 to more than seven models.
These developments demonstrate Hyundai's commitment to a greener, more electrified future, domestic production, and performance-focused vehicles.
