Hyundai Unveils Commercial Version of XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck and Dream for Hydrogen Transport in America
Hyundai Motor, a global leader in automotive technology, is making strides in transforming transportation with hydrogen energy. The company's hydrogen strategy, presented at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Anaheim, California on May 2, 2023, focuses on advancing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and developing a hydrogen ecosystem for zero-emission commercial transportation.
The cornerstone of Hyundai's strategy is the development and deployment of hydrogen fuel cell trucks, such as the XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor, a heavy-duty freight vehicle with an extended driving range. Hyundai Motor's XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor, now commercialized in the U.S., boasts a driving range of over 450 miles per charge, even when fully loaded. This tractor has successfully accumulated over 4 million miles in commercial operations across five countries.
Hyundai's approach also includes partnerships and collaborative projects to accelerate hydrogen infrastructure growth. The company showcased its commitment to hydrogen mobility by collaborating on fuel cell truck projects and expanding hydrogen infrastructure to reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality in heavy-duty transport.
In addition, Hyundai is focusing on technological innovation in fuel cell systems to improve efficiency, durability, and reduce hydrogen consumption, making hydrogen more competitive with diesel fuel for commercial use. The XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor is equipped with two 90 kW hydrogen fuel cell systems and a 350 kW e-motor, showcasing the company's advancements in this area.
Ken Ramirez, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Business at Hyundai Motor, emphasized the importance of achieving carbon neutrality to realize the company's vision of 'Progress for Humanity.' Hyundai Motor also previewed a clean logistics project for Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America, a dedicated electric vehicle factory.
Hyundai Motor's hydrogen strategy emphasizes an integrated approach combining vehicle technology, infrastructure development, and broad industry collaboration to establish hydrogen as a viable and scalable solution for carbon-neutral mobility, especially in the commercial transport sector. The company's hydrogen fuel cell technology has a real-world proven track record of its efficiency and durability.
The XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor is being exhibited at North America's largest advanced transportation technology and clean fleet event, the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, through May 4. Visitors can find the XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor and the hydrogen fuel cell system at booth #5888, and Hyundai Motor also takes part in a CV industry panel discussion.
Hyundai Motor envisions an integrated hydrogen ecosystem business to achieve carbon neutrality. The company's hydrogen strategy is a significant step towards realizing a sustainable future for transportation.
- Hyundai Motor's hydrogen strategy, as presented at the ACT Expo, aims to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology not only in automotive transportation but also in finance, as the company strives to make hydrogen more competitive with diesel fuel for commercial use, thereby reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality in the industry.
- Beyond the development of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, Hyundai is also collaborating with various partners and expanding hydrogen infrastructure in the transportation sector, hoping to foster a unified technology ecosystem that will optimize hydrogen energy's potential across multiple industries, including finance and technology.
