IMI Secures 3MW PEM Electrolyzer Contract for Vilnius Green Hydrogen Project from the MT Group

The Vilnius Green Hydrogen Production Facility, a significant part of Lithuania's national strategy to reduce CO2 emissions in the heating sector and integrate renewables and hydrogen technologies, has taken a significant step forward. The leading European EPC Contractor, MT Group, has awarded a contract to IMI for the delivery of a 3MW PEM electrolyzer for the facility.

The contract, announced in August 2025, marks the continuation of a successful partnership between MT Group and IMI, who previously worked together on the green hydrogen production plant in Klaipėda. The delivery of the 3MW PEM electrolyzer for the Vilnius facility is scheduled for Q4 2025.

The project is currently in the supply/contract phase, with commissioning and operational startup dates not yet detailed publicly. However, the awarding of the PEM electrolyzer contract reflects a significant milestone in the green hydrogen project timeline.

The Vilnius Green Hydrogen Production Facility is being developed by Vilnius District Heating Company and Vilnius City Municipality. The facility, located in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, is being implemented under the EU-supported Green Hydrogen Program.

The goal of the facility is to decarbonize district heating through locally produced green hydrogen. Mindaugas Zakaras, CEO of MT Group, said that the award represents another milestone in the energy transition for Vilnius. Gerimantas Bakanas, CEO of Vilniaus Šilumos Tinklai (VŠT), expressed confidence that the partnership with IMI will contribute to setting a new standard for sustainable energy in Vilnius, due to IMI's modern electrolysis technology ensuring high efficiency, quality, and safety at the future facility.

Giuseppe Buscemi, President EMEA for Process Automation at IMI, stated that the company is proud to support Lithuania's green hydrogen leadership. Green Energy Park Global, a founding partner of MT Group, will produce cost-competitive Green Hydrogen at the gigawatts scale, servicing decarbonization needs in hard-to-abate sectors like transport and power across Europe and beyond. Commissioning of the Vilnius facility is planned for 2026.

MT Group, headquartered in Vilnius, Lithuania, is responsible for the project's implementation. The company is known for technical excellence, execution reliability, and long-term client trust, with operations throughout Northern, Central, and Western Europe. This project further solidifies MT Group's role as a key partner in Europe's evolving energy transition and infrastructure modernization.

The project is part of Lithuania’s broader strategic move toward green hydrogen production and energy independence. The award agreement was concluded last week during a high-level visit to IMI's facility in Cagliari, Italy. IMI is a prominent manufacturer of electrolyzer systems, making them a suitable choice for this ambitious project.
