Grocer Co-op Food in the UK is grappling with the aftermath of a vicious cyber attack, as hackers exploit the company's weaknesses to an alarming extent.

The incident came to light in late April, revealing that the retailer had fallen victim to "sophisticated" cyber criminals. Co-op CEO Shirine Khoury-Haq reported a limited data breach. However, the hackers have since reached out to the BBC, asserting that they have pilfered vast quantities of customer and employee data.

An anonymous hacking group going by the name of "DragonForce" has reportedly provided screenshots of a Microsoft Teams chat with Co-op's head of cyber security, where the group allegedly confirms the extortion attempt and the stolen data.

The chat transcript shows the hackers warning the company by declaring, "We have customer database, and Co-op member card data."

Unfortunately, the cyber attack has forced Co-op to scale down deliveries to just essential items following damage to its electronic data interchange (EDI) system.

In response, Pat McFadden, the UK's Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, issued a firm government press release. McFadden emphasized the urgent need for organizations to focus on cybersecurity:

"These attacks need to be a wake-up call for every business in the UK. In a world where the cybercriminals targeting us are relentless in their pursuit of profit - with attempts being made every hour of every day - companies must treat cybersecurity as an absolute priority."
