The Local Government Board of the Valencia City Council has approved the Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation (PERTE) of the digitalization of the water cycle. This project, part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan funded by Next Generation funds from the European Union, aims to drive the digital transformation of both the systems of drinking water and those of sewerage and urban drainage.
The PERTE Sanitation project is based on the principles of sustainability, digitalization, and equality. It promotes normative changes requiring digitalization investments in the short and medium term for the control of volumes and quality parameters of the water cycle. The digitalization of the water cycle connects the physical and digital worlds, involving the use of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data.
The digitalization of the urban water cycle is expected to increase transparency in the management of the drinking water and sewerage service. It is anticipated that this transformation will improve efficiency, sustainability, and quality of the water management service, contributing to cost reduction, resource optimization, and improved user service quality. The deployment of communication networks as part of the digitalization process promotes the transformation into a Smart-City.
The digitalization of the urban water cycle includes the implementation of remote water meter reading. This innovation is expected to provide better service and more information for citizens. The use of digitalization is also expected to result in adaptation to new sectorial regulations. The investment in digitalization could qualify for funding of up to 80% of the cost.
The PERTE Sanitation project is a strategic initiative promoted by the various Ministries. Its ultimate goal is to reduce the environmental impact associated with the water cycle. The digitalization of the water cycle aims to provide a complete and accurate view of the entire process, from capture to treatment and distribution. The digitalization of the urban water cycle is a key tool for improving the management of the vital water resource.
The PERTE Sanitation project is expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the water cycle, leading to a more efficient and sustainable management of this vital resource in Valencia. This project is a significant step towards a digital and sustainable future for the city.
