iPhone, iPad, and Mac Apple Sports App Now Offering: Customizable Widgets

Apple has announced the launch of a new Sports widget for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, as well as the expansion of its Sports app to eight European countries.

The new widgets, available now, allow users to stay updated on sports scores, schedules, and the latest news without having to open the app. Craig Mahonchak, Head of Product for Sports at Apple, stated that the experience is designed to be personal, with the goal of users seeing exactly what they care about instantly.

The "My Teams" feature, one of Mahonchak's favourites, enables users to view information for their selected teams. Similarly, the "My Leagues" feature lets users follow every league they've chosen, including second-tier divisions like the 2. Bundesliga, Ligue 2, Segunda División, Serie B, and Primeira Liga.

Tapping on a game within the widgets will lead to the game card within the Apple Sports app, providing more detailed information. Users can also preschedule updates from the Live Activities feature for games or events in the future.

The updates to the Apple Sports app are arriving in time for the bulk of the NFL season and weeks ahead of the NBA and NHL kickoffs. The app, which was launched in February 2024, is now available in Spain, Portugal, Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, and Italy.

Expandable views in the widgets provide a snapshot of scores, past and upcoming games, and other details. Users can keep up with scores on their iPhone's lock screen, Apple Watch, or Dynamic Island display using the Live Activities feature.

The widgets prioritise displaying the most current, important details for teams being followed. Clicking the top of either widget will direct users to the main page in the app for the specific team or league.

In addition to the new widgets, the Apple Sports app is receiving updates, including the addition of widgets for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This means users can now keep up with their favourite sports right from their home screens.
