Itochu and Seven Bank initiate discussions regarding capital investment and business collaboration
In a significant move, Japanese conglomerate Itochu Corporation and financial services provider Seven Bank have announced plans to negotiate a capital and business alliance. The expected outcome of this partnership is a closer collaboration, particularly in the area of automated teller machines (ATMs) at FamilyMart stores, which Itochu owns.
Currently, FamilyMart has around 16,000 ATMs in its stores, with some provided by E-net Co. The proposed alliance aims to leverage Seven Bank's extensive ATM network—over 28,000 units nationwide—to potentially replace these ATMs at FamilyMart stores.
This strategic move is expected to bring about several benefits. Firstly, the replacement of current ATMs with Seven Bank’s machines could lead to significant cost savings for the convenience store chain.
Beyond cost efficiency, Itochu and Seven Bank also aim to collaborate across a wide range of financial fields, potentially developing new consumer finance services by combining Itochu’s domestic and international consumer business strength with Seven Bank’s financial platform.
Moreover, Itochu's consideration of acquiring up to a 20% stake in Seven Bank suggests a strategic commitment to deepening the partnership. This could potentially accelerate growth in consumer financial services within Itochu's retail ecosystem, especially at convenience stores like FamilyMart where many customers access ATMs.
In summary, the alliance targets leveraging Seven Bank’s ATM infrastructure to enhance FamilyMart’s in-store financial services, reduce operational expenses, and create new financial service offerings through a tighter corporate partnership. The parties aim to reach an agreement around September or October.
