Jet-setting at JFK's Terminal 6 to get a green boost with the introduction of a shared electric ground service team!
New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) Introduces Sustainable Terminal 6
JFK airport is set to revolutionize the aviation industry with the introduction of Terminal 6 (T6), a state-of-the-art facility that will be the first in North America to implement a common-use electric ground support equipment (eGSE) system. This initiative is part of the Port Authority's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Port Authority, JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), and Fortbrand Services are collaborating to manage and operate the all-electric ground support fleet at T6. The eGSE will be equipped in each of the terminal's ten gates, with ground handlers sharing them. Currently, 1,504 pieces of eGSE are in operation at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty International airports, a number expected to rise with the opening of T6 and New Terminal One.
Fortbrand Services, responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of the eGSE, will ensure compliance with operational standards while enhancing safety and efficiency. JMP and Fortbrand will also monitor the equipment in real-time to maintain optimal performance.
T6 is being developed in two phases, with the first six gates expected to open in 2026 and the entire terminal projected to be completed by 2028. The all-electric fleet at T6 is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2,500 metric tonnes annually.
In addition to the eGSE, T6 will incorporate various sustainability features, such as high-efficiency building systems, solar panels, stormwater capture and reuse, and a commitment to divert 90% of waste through recycling during construction and operation.
This groundbreaking project showcases the commitment of the aviation industry to sustainable practices. The all-electric T6 ground fleet is a game changer for airlines, according to JMP's chief operating officer, Karen Ali. The Airport Technology Excellence Awards, which celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the aviation industry, will undoubtedly recognize this significant achievement.
In 2022, the Port Authority mandated a transition to zero-emission ground service equipment at major airports, with a target for all commercially available GSE fleets to be zero-emission by 2030. The introduction of T6 marks a significant step towards achieving this goal.
The opening of T6, in April 2025, followed the Port Authority's opening of a $270m consolidated cargo handling centre at JFK in partnership with Realterm and Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) in the same year. The future of sustainable aviation is undoubtedly promising, and T6 is leading the way.
